Speech Introduce
The Gap between Clinicians and Engineers in Patient Journeys
Abstract Of Speech

When medical professions talk about the application of information technology in their daily practice, what they need is a mighty secretary like the J.A.R.V.I.S. served as the butler to Tony Stark in the Iron Man. The patient journey in doctors’ view is like an art of Picasso and they never expect the journey is the same between different patients despite there are lots of protocols and guidelines in every specialties around the world. However, there is always a rule with rationale when medical professionals adopt information technologies to optimize their works in practice.

For doctors, the data is considered ready once human readable. For engineers, the data may be ready when machine readable. For the era of deep learning, the prediction and result presented by the data set has to be explainable by doctors and processable by engineers at the same time. When medical professionals and engineers cannot fully understand the different definition of usable data in opposite site, misunderstanding may increase.

Considering the improvement of patient-centered care quality, we analyzed transplant patient’s comprehensive journey according to different roles and re-assembled the information flow to establish our case management system. In order to facilitate not only the effectiveness of clinical journey, but also the utilization in research maximally in the future, we cooperated with information technologists to re-design the data structure as well as the data flow. However, we realized the burden of turning clinical practice to digitization soon. It is mainly the problem of wrong data structure followed by medical industry in Taiwan, which had been driven by national health insurance for years. In this session, we will exhibit how we overcame the difficulties and what I have learned to minimize the gap between clinicians and engineers on the way to improve the patient’s journey
